Description of "Our Community" Taipei Municipal Linong Elementary School has been built in Guandu Plain, Beitou District. Guandu Plain is on the edge of Taipei Basin. It’s an open terrain and far from the populated down town area. Taipei City Government has decided to locate one of incinerators in this area (The other one is located in Neihu District). The government hopes that this is a solution to the problems caused by burying waste in landfills. At the same time, Locals who are interested in recycle business begin to set up their collecting and distributing centers in this area because that most of farms had already been abandoned. Recently, it has been reported that sportswear made from recycled plastic in Taiwan has won the international recognition and made a lot of profit from exportation. As to this point, the recycling factories in Beitou have made a certain contribution to the relevant industry. Also, in this old neighborhood, residents tend to be more conservative and frugal. That’s why there are quite a lot shops which run the business of repairing clothes, clocks, watches, and electronic appliances. Not only they have owned excellent skills to give new life to those items, but also have successfully extended those items’ expiration date. Reuse is truly an issue we have to think about it seriously. If we can continue using the existent resources, we don’t need to overexploit our precious natural wealth. How to respect the nature and our planet is an important subject for us. |

Summary of Our Project There is an Chinese old saying, “The nature was born to nourish the life of human being, but human being was not born to pay back.” According to the essence of Taoism, human being comes from nature, and is always the part of nature. We cannot live without the nature, how we can despise what the nature gives us. High technology brings us a whole new life in 21 century; however, we don’t really approach the nature but even farther. In most developed countries, a large proportion of food has been dumped after expiration date in supermarkets. Can you imagine that those dumped food are able to feed people living in some other underdeveloped countries? Apart from the problem above, a lot of articles for daily use have been abandoned for the reasons of old-fashioned. These two phenomena cause the overexploitation. People tend to use brand new products, but our earth could not afford that anymore. Our school aims to use the power of education to recall the old Chinese custom of thrift. “Respect the nature and cherish what we already have” is the main subject we will focus on. It not only can reduce the economic burden of every family, but also can let us do our best to protect our planet. To let students understand throwing broken articles into incinerators is not the only way. Actually, “repair and reuse” is another solution. As the locals in Beitou, we have responsibility to do the research. We will discuss the local issues such as, “incinerator, the business of recycle and repairs”. |
|
Research Method Our research methods include interview, observation, questionnaires, and documentation. In order to have experience-based learning, we will design activities for students as well. In the end, we will set up a website for sharing our research outcome. We hope that students can understand the importance of the old saying, “Respect the nature and cherish what we already have” through engaging students in relevant activities and uniting with community resources. |
